Lecture: Jan P. Hogendijk; Recovering the scientific contributions of Khwarizmi

Summary: Muhammad ibn-e Musa Khwarizmi lived in the beginning of the Islamic scientific tradition, when the influence of the earlier traditions of Greece, India and pre-Islamic Iran was still strong. Khwarizmi had an important influence on the later Islamic scientific tradition, but many of his own contributions have only come down to us indirectly or in revised form.

In the talk we will try to characterize his mathematical and astronomical work and discuss the question to what extent this can be recovered from the later sources that have come down to us.

In connection with this lecture, a webpage will be prepared on the contributions by Khwarizmi (which will be made available for download wherever possible) and the modern research literature
